at best, the world economy is on the brink of recession

deprive a person of oxygen and he will turn blue, collapse and eventually die. deprive economies of credit and a similar process kicks in. As the financial crisis has broadened and intensified, the global economy has begun to suffocate. 这也就是为什么现在几乎所有的中央银行都开始采取emergency measures，包括一轮大规模的利率调整，幸运的话，它们可以阻止大灾难，but to avert a global recession is unlikely.

根据IMF最新的World Economic Outlook，全球经济正在"entering a major downturn" in the face of  "the most dangerous shock" since 1930s.
